Less than 10 years ago there was a clear inverse relationship between the amount consumers spent at restaurants and the amount spent at grocery stores. It was pretty obvious: the more consumers spent on eating out, the less they spent on buying food to cook at home and vice versa.

But according to a story in NRN this week: How restaurants compete with alternative meal sources, both of those amounts have softened in the light of increased competition from sources including meal-kit delivery services and online groceries stores.
